Sa surface est de l\u2019ordre de 112.622 km<sup>2<\/sup>, le pays \u00e9tant bord\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019Ouest par le Togo et le Burkina Faso, au Nord par le Niger, \u00e0 l\u2019Est par le Nig\u00e9ria et au Sud par l\u2019Oc\u00e9an Atlantique. La largeur du pays est de 125 \u00e0 325 km d\u2019Est en Ouest. Les altitudes sont faibles en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral et seul le Massif de l\u2019Atakora, situ\u00e9 dans le Nord-Ouest d\u00e9passe r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement les 400 m. Du point de vue environnemental on constate une interruption relative de la for\u00eat dense, qui bien que pr\u00e9sente de part et d\u2019autre du pays notamment au Nig\u00e9ria et au Ghana, est tr\u00e8s rare ici. La zone de la savane s\u2019approche alors de l\u2019oc\u00e9an. Ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne est connu sous le nom de \u00ab&nbsp;<em>Dahomey gap<\/em>&nbsp;\u00bb<sup data-fn=\"f8d2a288-8b2b-4b8f-87b8-cb1863f148b3\" class=\"fn\">1<\/sup>. Le B\u00e9nin n\u2019est donc pas un pays pleinement forestier, bien que pr\u00e8s de 2\/3 de sa surface soit couvert par de la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation arbor\u00e9e. Celle-ci est dans un \u00e9tat m\u00e9diocre. Les habitats odonatologiques sont nombreux et vari\u00e9s : plantations agricoles, jach\u00e8res, savanes, for\u00eats, mangroves, fleuves ou rivi\u00e8res et ruisseaux. Le peuplement humain a fortement alt\u00e9r\u00e9 une part notable des habitats naturels en particulier dans le Sud et le Centre du pays. La population essentiellement occup\u00e9e par l\u2019agriculture (56% des actifs) est forte de plus de 11 millions d\u2019habitants. Elle a plus que doubl\u00e9 entre 1990 et 2020. La qualit\u00e9 des eaux p\u00e2tit de d\u00e9fauts d\u2019\u00e9puration correcte et souffre de la densit\u00e9 humaine croissante : elle est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement mauvaise. Les ressources naturelles tendent \u00e0 \u00eatre surexploit\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>Du point de vue climatique<\/strong> le B\u00e9nin se situe entre le domaine soudanien, sec, et le domaine guin\u00e9en, humide, du Nord au Sud. Entre les deux au niveau de Bassila et Dassa on parle de domaine soudano-guin\u00e9en aux caract\u00e9ristiques interm\u00e9diaires. Les pr\u00e9cipitations sont plus faibles dans le Nord (700 mm) que dans le Sud-Est (1500 mm), en passant par des valeurs interm\u00e9diaires notamment dans le Sud-Ouest (900 mm) ou le centre du pays. Elles atteignent au niveau du Massif de l\u2019Atakora, 1300 mm annuels, dans le Nord-Ouest du pays. Le climat est essentiellement sub-\u00e9quatorial, les temp\u00e9ratures varient peu au cours de l\u2019ann\u00e9e. Le pays est soumis aux changements climatiques qui se traduisent par une augmentation des perturbations. Les zones humides sont des habitats bien repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s au B\u00e9nin avec quelques grands lacs pour partie saum\u00e2tres ou lagunes comme le Lac Nokou\u00e9 (138 km<sup>2<\/sup>) ou le Lac Ah\u00e9m\u00e9 (78 km<sup>2<\/sup>). Si pr\u00e8s de 12% du territoire national est sous domaines prot\u00e9g\u00e9s situ\u00e9s dans le centre et le Nord du pays, les zones humides du Sud ne b\u00e9n\u00e9ficient pas de statut de conservation correct. Elles sont toutefois class\u00e9es comme sites <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Convention_de_Ramsar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RAMSAR<\/a> \u279a (convention internationale relative aux zones humides). Le climat influence fortement la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation du Sud au Nord, allant de paysages agricoles et forestiers \u00e0 la savane et aux paysages subd\u00e9sertiques. Ces paysages d\u00e9finissent la r\u00e9partition des esp\u00e8ces de Libellules en fonction des grands types de milieux ferm\u00e9s (for\u00eats) \u00e0 ouverts (brousse, savane). De mani\u00e8re critique les for\u00eats denses ont quasiment disparu au B\u00e9nin&nbsp;: elles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 rapidement r\u00e9duites au tiers de leur valeur entre les ann\u00e9es 1990 et 2000. Ainsi si elles formaient 1,7% du territoire en 1995, elles ont r\u00e9gress\u00e9 \u00e0 0,6% en 2006. For\u00eats claires et savanes r\u00e9gressent aussi mais de mani\u00e8re moins spectaculaire. Quant aux for\u00eats galeries elles semblent \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s stables (vers 2,5% de la surface nationale). Ces habitats \u00ab&nbsp;naturels&nbsp;\u00bb couvrent encore 63% de la surface du pays. Environ 33% concernent des campagnes agricoles et des surfaces artificialis\u00e9es comme les agglom\u00e9rations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>L\u2019article 27 de la Constitution<\/strong> affirme que \u00ab <em>toute personne a droit \u00e0 un environnement sain, satisfaisant et durable et a le droit de le d\u00e9fendre. L\u2019\u00c9tat veille \u00e0 la protection de l\u2019environnement <\/em>\u00bb. La gestion de l\u2019environnement est aussi un fait culturel au B\u00e9nin. Le pouvoir traditionnel a depuis des temps imm\u00e9moriaux \u00e9labor\u00e9 des droits d\u2019usage et des r\u00e8glementations pour prot\u00e9ger des sections sacr\u00e9es de cours d\u2019eau et diff\u00e9rentes for\u00eats sacr\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-ocean-gradient-background has-background has-medium-font-size\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:100\">Insectes du B\u00e9nin : pr\u00e9sentation sommaire<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>Les Insectes du B\u00e9nin<\/strong> sont tr\u00e8s mal connus \u00e0 l\u2019instar d\u2019autres pays africains voisins. Les inventaires ont principalement port\u00e9 sur les Col\u00e9opt\u00e8res, les L\u00e9pidopt\u00e8res, les Hym\u00e9nopt\u00e8res, les Homopt\u00e8res, les Isopt\u00e8res, les Thysanopt\u00e8res et les Dipt\u00e8res. La plus grande collection d\u2019Insectes du B\u00e9nin est en cours de d\u00e9termination et se trouve \u00e0 l\u2019Institut International Tropical d\u2019Agriculture (IITA). Elle est forte de 5.500 esp\u00e8ces identifi\u00e9es au sein d\u2019une collection de 350.000 sp\u00e9cimens d\u2019Arthropodes (Insectes et Acariens). L\u2019entomofaune du B\u00e9nin, certes mal connue, est riche et tr\u00e8s caract\u00e9ristique. On note par exemple chez les Odonates la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019esp\u00e8ces comme <em>Pseudagrion aguessei <\/em>qui n\u2019\u00e9tait ant\u00e9rieurement connu que de la Sierra Leone et du Mali ou <em>Lestinogomphus minutus <\/em>et <em>Ceriagrion citrinum <\/em>connus jusqu\u2019alors avec certitude uniquement du Nig\u00e9ria (Anonyme 2009).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-ocean-gradient-background has-background\" style=\"font-size:25px;font-style:normal;font-weight:100\">\u00c9l\u00e9ments de l&rsquo;histoire des Odonates du B\u00e9nin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Si on se base sur Kipping &amp; al. (2009), le taux de prospection odonatologique para\u00eetra moyen au B\u00e9nin si on se r\u00e9f\u00e8re \u00e0 l\u2019essentiel de l\u2019Afrique o\u00f9 il est faible. Le pays n\u2019est finalement pas particuli\u00e8rement \u00e0 la tra\u00eene en ce qui concerne la r\u00e9colte d\u2019informations sur les Odonates dans ce secteur de l&rsquo;Afrique occidentale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019\u00e9tude des Odonates du B\u00e9nin a \u00e9t\u00e9 amorc\u00e9e par Andr\u00e9 Villiers en 1950 (Fraser 1951) et compl\u00e9t\u00e9e seulement une cinquantaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es plus tard suite \u00e0 des prospections men\u00e9es par S\u00e9verin Tchibozo et vis\u00e9es par Klaas-Douwe Dijkstra (Tchibozo &amp; Dijkstra 2004)<sup data-fn=\"2ca6789e-c2d1-4386-8d3e-b9d232fe0e3b\" class=\"fn\">2<\/sup>. L&rsquo;ann\u00e9e suivante Lieckweg &amp; Niedringhaus (2005) rendent compte au sein d&rsquo;un article sur les Odonates d&rsquo;Afrique occidentale de 18 esp\u00e8ces vues au B\u00e9nin. Fraser (<em>op. cit.<\/em>) donne une liste de 41 esp\u00e8ces (<em>recte <\/em>37) selon Tchibozo &amp; Dijkstra (2004) qui en ont r\u00e9pertori\u00e9 73 (<em>recte <\/em>: 74) de mai \u00e0 ao\u00fbt 2002 (financement de l&rsquo;International Dragonfly Fund) si bien qu&rsquo;au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 2000 ce sont 86 esp\u00e8ces d&rsquo;Odonates selon ces auteurs qui sont connus dans le pays (corrig\u00e9 : 84) et plus d&rsquo;une centaine escompt\u00e9e. Dijkstra &amp; Claunitzer (2006) avancent par hypoth\u00e8se (esp\u00e8ces potentiellement pr\u00e9sentes), le nombre optimiste de 219 esp\u00e8ces pour le B\u00e9nin. En octobre 2022, la liste est de 116 esp\u00e8ces seulement et le nombre de 219 propos\u00e9, est donc loin d&rsquo;\u00eatre atteint. Il nous appara\u00eet probable que Dijkstra &amp; Clausnitzer (<em>op. cit.<\/em>) ait surestim\u00e9 le nombre des esp\u00e8ces foresti\u00e8res dont certaines ont peu de chances de se trouver au B\u00e9nin. De telles esp\u00e8ces existent toutefois de part et d&rsquo;autre au Togo et au Nig\u00e9ria dans certains cas. Il pourrait s&rsquo;av\u00e9rer que le <em>Dahomey gap<\/em> ait un influence tr\u00e8s significative sur de telles esp\u00e8ces en raison du fort d\u00e9ficit forestier li\u00e9 \u00e0 ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne g\u00e9ographique. Ces auteurs proposent un peu plus de 220 esp\u00e8ces potentielles pour le Togo et O&rsquo;Neill &amp; Paulson (2001) connaissent 123 esp\u00e8ces au Ghana.De la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re le chiffre de 260 esp\u00e8ces potentielles est avanc\u00e9 par Dijkstra &amp; Clausnitzer (<em>op. cit.<\/em>) pour le Nig\u00e9ria, par contre dans la zone sah\u00e9lienne plus au nord, ce ne sont gu\u00e8re plus d&rsquo;une soixantaine d&rsquo;esp\u00e8ces qui sont envisag\u00e9es (Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger). Les m\u00eames auteurs proposent 323 esp\u00e8ces pour la R\u00e9publique D\u00e9mocratique du Congo, le maximum et l&rsquo;\u00e9valuation est au minimum pour la Mauritanie avec 19 esp\u00e8ces seulement. (2008), 816 esp\u00e8ces, valeur \u00e0 comparer avec les 1635 n\u00e9otropicales et les 1665 esp\u00e8ces orientales. L&rsquo;ensemble de ces zones pr\u00e9sentent encore un fort potentiel de d\u00e9couverte et chaque ann\u00e9e de nouvelles esp\u00e8ces y sont d\u00e9crites pour la Science. A titre d&rsquo;exemple l&rsquo;article de Dijkstra &amp; al. (2015) est tr\u00e8s d\u00e9monstratif puisqu&rsquo;il ajoute \u00e0 lui-seul quelques 60 nouvelles esp\u00e8ces pour l&rsquo;Afrique, soit une progression imm\u00e9diate de 7% de la biodiversit\u00e9 odonatologique du continent. Le nombre actuel d&rsquo;esp\u00e8ces connues en Afrique n&rsquo;est pas rapport\u00e9, mais il doit s&rsquo;approcher de 900.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/deliry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/wolwow-1536x427-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"285\" src=\"https:\/\/deliry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/wolwow-1536x427-1-1024x285.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-115\" style=\"width:640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/deliry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/wolwow-1536x427-1-1024x285.png 1024w, https:\/\/deliry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/wolwow-1536x427-1-300x83.png 300w, https:\/\/deliry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/wolwow-1536x427-1-768x214.png 768w, https:\/\/deliry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/wolwow-1536x427-1.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u2022\u2022\u2022&nbsp;WOL et wOw \u2022\u2022\u2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Ce sont 6379 esp\u00e8ces qui sont rapport\u00e9s sur la <em>World Odonata List<\/em> (Paulson &amp; al. 2022) fin octobre 2022. Le <em>World odonata Web<\/em>, moins restrictif, en propose 6388 (Deliry 2022). Dans un tel contexte l&rsquo;Afrique comprendrait environ 14 % de la biodiversit\u00e9 odonatologique mondiale. Au niveau de l&rsquo;Afrique le B\u00e9nin est proche de 13 % en rapport avec le continent. Un pays comme la R\u00e9publique du Congo devrait offrir \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s 40 % des esp\u00e8ces africaines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il n&rsquo;y a que fort peu de publications sp\u00e9cifiques aux Odonates du B\u00e9nin (Fraser 1951, Tchibozo &amp; Dijkstra 2004, Lieckweg &amp; Niedringhaus 2005, Tchibozo &amp; al. 2008, Tchibozo 2021). Ici se situe cette contribution dont la d\u00e9marche a \u00e9t\u00e9 entam\u00e9e vers 2020, ce, jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 cette mise en forme des informations compil\u00e9s sur ce site Internet en 2022<sup data-fn=\"4f747c47-3ad2-4080-8f3e-3e8030e4d9c8\" class=\"fn\">3<\/sup>. Elle est accompagn\u00e9e de l&rsquo;\u00e9dition de la <em>Lettre \u00e0 Selys <\/em>n\u00b02, dont j&rsquo;ai r\u00e9cemment retrouv\u00e9 dans mes archives la version finalis\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right has-small-font-size\">Voir aussi phototh\u00e8que examin\u00e9e<sup data-fn=\"0ce2459f-4ccf-4ca4-a7d8-5c07252a41f0\" class=\"fn\">4<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>L\u2019\u00e9volution des paysages au B\u00e9nin depuis quelques milliers d\u2019ann\u00e9es s\u2019est traduite globalement par l\u2019existence d\u2019un secteur forestier au Sud et plus r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement vert au Nord. Il y a une aridification prononc\u00e9e dans le Nord du pays et une r\u00e9gression du couvert forestier sur l\u2019ensemble du pays. Le Nord tend vers des habitats semi-arides et vers le Sud vers de la savane puis de la savane arbor\u00e9e. Il est travers\u00e9 par quelques cours d\u2019eau bord\u00e9s de for\u00eats galeries plus ou moins d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es. Au niveau du <em>Dahomey gap, <\/em>la savane arbor\u00e9e fortement \u00ab&nbsp;fractionn\u00e9e&nbsp;\u00bb par des zones agricoles atteint les zones littorales, alors que dans les r\u00e9gions voisines c\u2019est la for\u00eat qui borde l\u2019Atlantique. Le couvert forestier est fortement fragment\u00e9, toujours en d\u00e9clin et devenu tr\u00e8s relictuel. Des efforts sont men\u00e9s pour le prot\u00e9ger en se basant sur une approche traditionnelle (for\u00eats sacr\u00e9es). Cons\u00e9quence de cette dynamique, le nombre d\u2019esp\u00e8ces foresti\u00e8res et surtout l\u2019importance de leurs populations, sont r\u00e9duites. La diversit\u00e9 est augment\u00e9e d\u2019esp\u00e8ces fr\u00e9quentant les points d\u2019eau temporaires des zones de savane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A relativement court terme, les paysages naturels du B\u00e9nin sont menac\u00e9s au Nord par l\u2019aridification et au Sud par la poursuite de la d\u00e9forestation avec une augmentation continue des paysages agricoles et par l\u2019extension de l\u2019urbanisation. Les changements climatiques se traduisent par une \u00e9rosion du littoral et le d\u00e9clin des mangroves avec des cons\u00e9quences en cascade sur la faune ichthyologique. Des efforts sont men\u00e9s ici aussi pour maintenir ou restaurer ces habitats peu \u00e9tudi\u00e9s du point de vue odonatologique en Afrique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>La faune odonatologique enregistr\u00e9e pour ce pays sert de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence pour la connaissance des Odonates de l\u2019Ouest de l\u2019Afrique, relativement incompl\u00e8te par ailleurs. Ainsi Couteyen &amp; Papazian (2012) utilisent cette liste pour \u00e9tablir les affinit\u00e9s biog\u00e9ographiques des Odonates \u00eeles voisines de Madagascar. L'examen de la phototh\u00e8que d'Odonates du B\u00e9nin de S\u00e9verin Tchibozo et le fait que les collections disponibles pour ce pays, aient \u00e9t\u00e9 examin\u00e9s par Klaas-Douwe Dijkstra, permet de donner un bon cr\u00e9dit \u00e0 la d\u00e9termination d'une part significative des esp\u00e8ces list\u00e9es pour le B\u00e9nin. D'autres contr\u00f4les ont pu \u00eatre faits sur des images disponibles sur Internet o\u00f9 qui m'ont \u00e9t\u00e9 transmises. J'ai pu monter des \u00e9l\u00e9ments cartographiques \u00e0 partir de bases de donn\u00e9es disponibles en ligne (pr\u00e8s d'un millier de donn\u00e9es : \u00e0 pr\u00e9ciser). Enfin en ao\u00fbt 2022, j'ai financ\u00e9 sur mes fonds propres, une mission naturaliste au B\u00e9nin dans le cadre des <em><a href=\\\"https:\/\/deliry.net\/\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noreferrer noopener\\\">Histoires Naturelles<\/a>, <\/em>afin d'y d\u00e9couvrir et mieux conna\u00eetre diff\u00e9rentes esp\u00e8ces et leurs habitats.
