Derri\u00e8re ce nom \u00e9vocateur, familier \u00e0 tout amateur de libellules, se cache une histoire scientifique dense, parfois tortueuse, mais toujours fascinante. L\u2019article est somptueux, magnifi\u00e9 par une planche de <strong>Guillaume Severin<\/strong> dont la finesse graphique illustre \u00e0 merveille l\u2019\u00e9tonnement de Selys devant \u00ab le plus extraordinaire et le plus anormal des Odonates vivants \u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mais l\u2019aventure se complique : quelques mois plus t\u00f4t, <strong>Brauer, Redtenbacher et Gandlbauer<\/strong> avaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 publi\u00e9 un genre fossile du m\u00eame nom (<em>Palaeophlebia synlestoides<\/em>), d\u00e9couvert en Sib\u00e9rie. Le nom de Selys devenait donc homonyme et devait \u00eatre remplac\u00e9. <strong>Calvert (1903)<\/strong> proposa <em>Epiophlebia<\/em>, tandis que <strong>Handlirsch (1906)<\/strong> sugg\u00e9ra <em>Neopalaeophlebia<\/em> \u2013 seul le premier sera retenu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans le m\u00eame mouvement, Handlirsch cr\u00e9e le groupe des <strong><em>Anisozygoptera<\/em><\/strong>, o\u00f9 il rassemble sept familles, dont six fossiles. La septi\u00e8me, les <strong><em>Neopalaeophlebiidae<\/em><\/strong>, deviendra peu apr\u00e8s les<em> <strong>Epiophlebiidae<\/strong><\/em> (Muttkowski, 1910), rattach\u00e9es au genre <em>Epiophlebia <\/em>o\u00f9 se trouve replac\u00e9e l&rsquo;esp\u00e8ce japonaise, unique en son genre alors, <em>Epiophlebia superstes <\/em>(de Selys Longchamps, 1889).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2d856741d267ec96b27222d9bd4bd5d2\" style=\"color:#008000;font-size:25px\">Doutes, r\u00e9habilitations et d\u00e9bats<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/deliry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/EpiophlebiaLarva.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"274\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/deliry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/EpiophlebiaLarva.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9002\" srcset=\"https:\/\/deliry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/EpiophlebiaLarva.png 274w, https:\/\/deliry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/EpiophlebiaLarva-206x300.png 206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Epiophlebia laidlawi<\/em> Tillyard, 1921<br>Nymphe ayant servi \u00e0 la description<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>La suite ressemble \u00e0 un v\u00e9ritable feuilleton scientifique. <strong>Tillyard (1917)<\/strong> doute d\u2019abord de la validit\u00e9 des <em>Anisozygoptera<\/em>, consid\u00e9rant qu\u2019il s\u2019agit d\u2019un assemblage artificiel, purement fossile. Il range <em>Epiophlebia superstes<\/em> dans les <em>Lestidae<\/em>, avant de revenir sur sa d\u00e9cision en 1921, lorsqu\u2019il d\u00e9crit <em>Epiophlebia laidlawi<\/em> : les <strong><em>Epiophlebiidae<\/em><\/strong> retrouvent alors leur place dans les <em>Anisozygoptera<\/em>, r\u00e9habilitant ainsi le groupe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus tard, <strong>Fraser (1957)<\/strong> reconna\u00eet que l\u2019ensemble est paraphyl\u00e9tique, mais choisit de le conserver, au nom d\u2019un certain pragmatisme nomenclatural. Cette position sera pl\u00e9bicit\u00e9e, preuve de la force symbolique et historique du nom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Puis survient le tournant critique. <strong>Whalley (1985)<\/strong>, suivi par <strong>Nel et al. (1993)<\/strong>, \u00e9cartent totalement les <em>\u00ab\u00a0Anisozygoptera\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> de la classification, arguant en 1993 que les fossiles regroup\u00e9s sous ce nom ne partagent aucun v\u00e9ritable lien phylog\u00e9n\u00e9tique, ni entre eux ni avec <em>Epiophlebia<\/em>. Ces derniers sont alors replac\u00e9s dans les <strong><em>Epiophlebiidae<\/em><\/strong> au sein des <em>Epiproctophora<\/em> par certains auteurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entre-temps, <strong>Asahina (1954)<\/strong> avait ajout\u00e9 la superfamille des <em>Epiophlebioidea<\/em>, enrichissant encore la mosa\u00efque de r\u00e9visions. <strong>Carle (2012)<\/strong> reprend ensuite le dossier, int\u00e9grant les <em>Anisozygoptera<\/em> dans une perspective \u00e9largie au sein des <em>Epiproctophora<\/em>. Et j&rsquo;en oublie n\u00e9cessairement&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6dc2cf5a74cde3be9131e2c65a0d589d\" style=\"color:#008000;font-size:25px\">Pour une r\u00e9interpr\u00e9tation coh\u00e9rente<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mes travaux (Deliry 2014, 2018, 2022) m\u2019ont conduit \u00e0 revisiter cet ensemble : longtemps per\u00e7u comme artificiel, il peut aujourd\u2019hui \u00eatre repens\u00e9. En suivant la logique phylog\u00e9n\u00e9tique moderne, je propose de <strong>restreindre les <em>Anisozygoptera<\/em><\/strong> \u00e0 <em>Epiophlebia<\/em> et \u00e0 ses proches fossiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cette d\u00e9finition, partag\u00e9e par <strong>Dijkstra &amp; al. (2013)<\/strong>, permet \u00e0 la fois de respecter la <strong>stabilit\u00e9 taxonomique<\/strong> \u2014 un principe cher au Code \u2014 et de <strong>sauvegarder un nom embl\u00e9matique et m\u00e9diatique<\/strong>, cher aux odonatologues depuis plus d\u2019un si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il s&rsquo;agit de plus, de les maintenir comme <strong>infra-ordre du sous-ordre des<em> Epiproctophora<\/em><\/strong>, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des <em>Anisoptera<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-39864b2ff29cf9880d251fd121a8d941\" style=\"color:#008000;font-size:25px\">Le sens d\u2019un nom<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conserver <em>Anisozygoptera<\/em>, ce n\u2019est pas c\u00e9der \u00e0 la nostalgie, mais reconna\u00eetre la valeur scientifique et culturelle d\u2019un terme qui a accompagn\u00e9 la discipline tout enti\u00e8re. Entre <em>Zygoptera<\/em>, <em>Anisoptera<\/em> et <em>Anisozygoptera<\/em>, la triade historique fond\u00e9e sur les structures g\u00e9nitales secondaires des m\u00e2les garde une logique morphologique et symbolique forte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ainsi, la classification binaire propos\u00e9e par certains (<em>Zygoptera<\/em> \/ <em>Epiproctophora<\/em>) trouve un compromis \u00e9l\u00e9gant dans la reconnaissance des <em>Anisozygoptera<\/em> comme infra-ordre : une mani\u00e8re d\u2019honorer la tradition tout en int\u00e9grant les acquis modernes de la phylog\u00e9nie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En somme, <strong>sauver le nom <em>Anisoptera<\/em><\/strong>, c\u2019est pr\u00e9server un pan de la m\u00e9moire taxonomique des Odonates, tout en lui redonnant sens et coh\u00e9rence.
