C’est la première nouvelle espèce de félin identifiée depuis plus d’un siècle. Son nom vient des populations locales des Yungas, qui connaissaient déjà cet animal.<br /> <br /> Sa découverte scientifique commence en 2016 avec l’étude d’un animal d’abord pris pour un chat domestique. Des analyses génétiques ont ensuite montré qu’il s’agissait d’une espèce distincte, séparée des autres chats-tigres depuis environ 1,4 million d’années.<br /> <br /> Plus petit qu’un chat domestique, il possède un pelage brun clair couvert de grandes taches sombres et pèse jusqu’à 2 kg. Il vit uniquement dans les forêts des Yungas boliviens, semble principalement nocturne et se nourrit notamment de petits rongeurs.<br /> <br /> Son nombre exact reste inconnu.
