On a découvert en Bavière (Allemagne) et vivant au Miocène il y a près de 11 Ma, un grand Singe bipède, n’appartenant pas à la Lignée humaine. Il occupait un habitat forestier riche en faune. Les derniers grands Singes présents en Europe ont disparu il y a 8 Ma, et leur retour survient vers 1 Ma, avec Homo antecesor Ŧ.
